Introduction: It has been well documented that obesity increases cardiovascular and metabolic
morbidity and mortality. However, it is increasingly recognized that the location
of excess adiposity, particularly increased deposition of visceral adipose tissue
(VAT), is of greater importance in determining the adverse health effects of overweight
and obesity. Although exercise is widely believed to benefit abdominal adiposity,
there has been no systematic examination of the independent, comparative and synergistic
benefits of aerobic exercise and progressive resistance therapies for VAT modulation.
